Hill Management Tours™ 1 and 2
safely guide skaters up and down low to moderately steep grade hills. The Tours build confidence and apply skills mastered in Robichon's® Outdoor Skate Basic™ Series. Robichon's® Instructor / Guides guide skaters through a pre-skate gear inspection, reviews specific skills learned in Robichon's® Outdoor Skate Basics™ series, escorts skaters up and down carefully chosen hills applying OSB skills and ensuring your success. After hill mastery, the instructor / guides skate the group around some of the finest paved trails in Minnesota - Lake Harriet (Tour 1) or Lake Calhoun (Tour 2) assisting you with terrain negotiation, skate technique, group skating, safety and fun! Hill Management Tour 1 or HMT1 / Level 1 - "Getting Started Up and Down Hills" In HMT1, we apply skills from Robichon's® Outdoor Skate Basics™ 1 and 2 in the real inline skating world. We warm up on the grass and smooth flats, moving steadily to our low to medium grade hill. Once we safely journey up and down our hill, we use our terrain negotiation skills to maneuver around Lake Harriet!
Skill Ability Level: For advanced beginner skaters with some stopping and skating experience.
Suggested Prerequisite: Robichon's® Outdoor Skate Basic 1 and 2
Some Specific Skills:

  • Movement Uphill: modify stride 1, side step full swizzle 1, stride swizzle 1 combo,
  • Stopping and Speed Control Flats/Downhill (low to moderate speeds): heel stop 1 & 2, heel pump stop™, quick stop™, and grass stop
  • Turning Downhill: braking a - frame turn (L & R), braking linked a-frame turns
  • Terrain: using skaters' rules of the road, defensive falling and skate position, getting up, dealing with stairs, standing still & The Stabilizer™
  • Terrain Negotiation: (scissor, swizzle, skate skinny, teeter totter, tuck, turn and jump.)
  • Tour Preparation: Pre-skate gear inspection, gear checks, skate tool kit, water, and fanny pack

Terrain Type: 1st - Flat & Smooth, 2nd - low to medium grade, 3rd - easy terrain negotiation
Tour Tips: We require a full set of protective gear including helmet, elbow, knee and wrist guards. (provided by Robichon's® free of charge). Bring tools for minor skate repairs, water supply, sunscreen and a fanny pack for water and tools. Take OSB 1 and 2.
Next Fun Level: OSB 3

Hill Management Tour 2 or HMT2 / Level 2 - " Hills As Your Playground" In HMT2, we apply skills from Robichon's® Outdoor Skate Basics™ 3 and 4 in the real inline skating world. We warm up on the grass and smooth flats, moving steadily to our medium to moderately steep grade hill. Once we safely journey up and down our hill, we use our terrain negotiation skills to maneuver around Lake Calhoun and back up our moderately steep hill!
Skill Ability Level: For intermediate plus skaters who can stop, turn on moderately sloped hills and skate at least 4 miles with ease.
Suggested Prerequisite: Robichon's® Hill Management Tour 1 and OSB 3 and 4
Some Specific Skills:

  • Movement Uphill: modify stride 2 (range of gears), trail stride
  • Stopping and Speed Control Flats/Downhill (moderate to higher speeds): T-stop (drag), inward glide stop, inward glide step stop, heel stop 3 its quick stop™, and grass stop
  • Turning Downhill: linked braking and gliding parallel turns
  • Terrain: using skaters' rules of the road, hopping, skipping, jumping, leaping, drafting basics, anticipation, communication, speed as your friend and skating off curbs
  • Terrain Negotiation: (scissor, sit, swizzle, skate skinny, teeter totter, tuck, turn and jump.)
  • Tour Preparation: Pre-skate gear inspection, gear checks, skate tool kit, water, and fanny pack

Terrain Type: 1st - Flat & Smooth, 2nd - medium to moderately steep grade, 3rd - more difficult terrain negotiation

Bring tools for minor skate repairs, water supply, sunscreen, change for ice cream and a fanny pack for water and tools. Take OSB 3, 4 and Hill Management Tour™ 1.
